Finance Minister Michael Noonan has announced that mobile phone providers have been incorrectly charging VAT on charitable donations made via text message.
Mr Noonan made the revelation in the Dail in response to a parliamentary question made by Fianna Fail TD Eamon O’ Cuiv.
Charitable donations are not subject to Irish VAT.
The Finance Minister said the phone companies are working to resolve the issue in the near future.
